Issue description

The control module expected to receive the TSC1 (Torque/Speed Control 1) message over the J1939 CAN bus network, but the message was not received within the expected timeframe. This indicates a communication breakdown on the CAN bus, typically between the engine controller and the machine's main control module.

Check the cause

  1. Use the electronic Service Tool to verify that fault code 9154 is currently present and active

  2. Look for other active CAN bus or engine controller fault codes (e.g., 9151, 9152, or 9153) which could point to a broader network failure

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness routing from the Engine ECU to the UCM for physical damage, corrosion, abrasion, and incorrect attachment

  4. Ensure that the connectors at both the UCM and the Engine ECU are secure and fully seated

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Hook up the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm the UCM 9154 code is active and monitor CAN bus traffic.

  2. Visual & Physical Inspection

    Trace the CAN bus wiring harness between the UCM and the Engine ECU. Look for any pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation.

  3. Inspect Pins and Connectors

    Disconnect the harness connectors at the UCM and the Engine ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pins that have been pushed back into the connector body.

  4. Test CAN Bus Integrity

    Using a multimeter, perform continuity and resistance checks on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the modules. Ensure there are no open circuits or shorts to ground/power.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If wiring damage or connector failure is found, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

  6. Module Replacement/Reflash

    If the wiring and connections are perfectly intact and the CAN bus resistance is correct (typically 60 ohms across the network), the UCM itself may have an internal failure or require a software re-flash.

  7. Clear and Verify

    After repairs, clear the fault codes using the Service Tool, cycle the key, and operate the machine to verify the TSC1 timeout does not return.
