New Holland UCM 9161 – UCM: Pattern Select (ISO/H): Short to Power
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit responsible for the ISO/H control pattern selection switch (or its indicator light) is receiving unintended voltage. The circuit is shorted to a power source, which prevents the system from accurately reading the switch state or toggling the electro-hydraulic control patterns.

Check the cause
Verify the symptom by turning the key ON and attempting to change the control pattern (push and hold ISO/H switch). If it fails to switch or the indicator stays illuminated abnormally, the fault is active.
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Pattern Select switch on the cab pillar/dash for chafed wires rubbing against the cab frame.
Disconnect the switch and UCM connectors to check for pushed-out pins, water intrusion, or corrosion bridging power and signal pins.
With the switch disconnected and key ON, use a multimeter to probe the signal wire on the harness side for unintended 12V (or reference voltage).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Switch
Carefully pry out or unscrew the cab dash panel housing the ISO/H Pattern Select switch.
Isolate the Fault
Disconnect the wiring pigtail from the back of the switch.
Repair the Harness
If your diagnostic checks revealed voltage on the signal wire, trace the harness down the cab pillar to the UCM. Locate the pinched or melted section of the wire where it is making contact with a 12V power wire. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged section, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Switch
If the harness wiring is intact and tests perfectly back to the UCM, the switch has failed internally. Pop the old switch out of the bezel and snap the new one into place.
Reassembly
Reconnect the switch pigtail and reinstall the dash panel.
Calibration/Testing
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Press and hold the ISO/H pattern select switch for a few seconds. Listen for the audible confirmation alarm and verify the text display confirms the pattern change. Ensure the UCM 9161 code moves from 'Active' to 'Stored/Inactive' and clear it using an EST (Electronic Service Tool) or the onboard display.
Parts you might need
(1)ISO/H Pattern Select Switch (Control Pattern Switch)
Ensure you are ordering the switch for an Electro-Hydraulic (EH) machine, as mechanical control machines do not utilize this switch or the UCM in the same way.
