It is pressed into the housing bore and seals against the axle shaft surface. A worn or hardened seal allows lubricant to weep past the lip, which can lead to bearing damage if fluid level drops. As an original component, the seal lip geometry matches the shaft diameter and surface finish specified for the axle housing, so no shimming or adapter is needed during replacement.
