The original manufacturer specifies the cross-section and inner diameter to match the groove geometry, so the ring compresses to the correct fill ratio without extruding under pressure. A degraded O-ring that has hardened or taken a compression set will allow seepage at the joint, which can lead to fluid loss or air ingress. On reinstall, ensure the groove and mating face are clean and free of debris.
