This O-ring seals a joint in the engine assembly, preventing oil or coolant leakage at the interface between two stationary components. It sits in a machined groove and compresses to fill the gap when the mating parts are fastened. A hardened or cracked O-ring allows fluid to weep past the seal, which can lead to low oil pressure or coolant loss. On reinstallation, ensure the groove is clean and the O-ring is seated without twisting before torquing the joint to specification.
