It sits in the machined groove on the mating face of the gearbox casing, where it compresses to form a static seal between the flanges. A degraded or hardened o-ring allows oil to weep past the joint, reducing lubricant level and increasing gear and bearing wear. The manufacturer produces this seal to the same cross-section and inner diameter as the original component, so it seats correctly in the groove without requiring shimming or additional sealant. On installation, clean the groove and housing faces thoroughly; apply a light film of gearbox oil to the o-ring before seating it to prevent pinching during assembly.
