This transmission o-ring seals the joint between two gearbox housing halves, preventing oil leakage under pressure and temperature cycling. It sits in the machined groove on the mating face of the gearbox casing, where it compresses to form a static seal between the flanges. A degraded or hardened o-ring allows oil to weep past the joint, reducing lubricant level and increasing gear and bearing wear. The manufacturer produces this seal to the same cross-section and inner diameter as the original component, so it seats correctly in the groove without requiring shimming or additional sealant. On installation, clean the groove and housing faces thoroughly; apply a light film of gearbox oil to the o-ring before seating it to prevent pinching during assembly.
