This O-ring seals the gearbox housing at the interface between the cover and the main casing. It sits in a machined groove on the gearbox cover and prevents lubricating oil from leaking past the joint under pressure or during thermal expansion. A hardened or cracked O-ring allows oil seepage that can lead to low lubricant level and eventual gear or bearing damage. The manufacturer supplies this seal to the same cross-section and material hardness as the original assembly, ensuring it compresses correctly into the groove without over-squeezing or rolling out of position. On reinstallation, clean the groove thoroughly and lightly lubricate the O-ring before seating the cover.
