It sits in the primary filtration stage, between the fuel tank and the secondary filter, protecting the injection system from water and particulate ingress. A restricted element reduces fuel flow, causing hard starting and power loss under load. The manufacturer specifies the filtration media and bypass-valve cracking pressure to match the original assembly, ensuring the fuel system receives the correct flow rate and pressure drop. On replacement, drain the water separator bowl and prime the system to remove air.
