This turbocharger compresses intake air before it enters the engine cylinders, increasing volumetric efficiency and power output. It is mounted on the exhaust manifold and is driven by exhaust gas flow; the turbine wheel spins the compressor wheel on a shared shaft, forcing more air into the combustion chamber. A worn turbocharger produces a loss of boost pressure, reduced engine power, and increased exhaust smoke. The manufacturer machines the rotating assembly to the same shaft clearance and balance specification as the original unit, so no shimming or rebalancing is required during installation. Replace the oil feed and return lines and the gaskets on both the exhaust and intake connections when reinstalling.
