This auger finger is the retractable component mounted inside the header auger tube. It sweeps crop material laterally across the header floor toward the feeder house intake. The finger extends and retracts as the auger rotates, using a fixed cam track inside the tube to control its timing. A worn or bent finger fails to retract fully, causing it to strike the header floor or the auger trough, which produces a rhythmic knocking sound and can damage the auger flighting. The original manufacturer machines the finger to the correct profile and pin bore location so it tracks the cam without binding. On replacement, verify that the finger pivots freely on its mounting pin and that the retaining hardware is torqued to specification.
