This timing cover gasket seals the joint between the timing cover and the engine block, preventing oil leakage from the front of the engine. It sits at the front of the crankshaft and camshaft drive assembly, where it contains lubricating oil around the timing gears or chain. A degraded gasket allows oil to seep past the cover, leading to visible drips and a gradual loss of engine oil pressure. The gasket is manufactured to match the original sealing surface profile, so it compresses evenly when the cover is torqued to specification. On reinstallation, clean both mating surfaces thoroughly and replace the gasket; do not reuse the old one.
