It sits in the machined groove on the transmission housing, where it compresses against the cover face to maintain hydraulic pressure inside the shift-actuation circuit. A degraded or hardened O-ring allows oil seepage, which leads to pressure loss and erratic gear engagement. The part is manufactured to the original cross-section and groove dimensions so that it seats correctly without over-compression or pinching. On reinstall, ensure the sealing surfaces are clean and dry; apply a light coat of transmission fluid to the O-ring before fitting.
