The seal's lip rides on the rotating shaft, and its outer diameter presses into the bore of the gearbox housing to create a static seal. A worn or hardened seal lip allows oil to weep past the shaft, leading to a gradual loss of lubricant and eventual gear or bearing damage. This component is manufactured to the original housing bore and shaft diameter tolerances, so no shimming or adapter is required during installation. On reinstall, ensure the seal bore is clean and free of burrs, and drive the seal squarely into the housing to the specified depth.
