This O-ring seals the gearbox housing at the interface between the case and the cover, preventing lubricant leakage and maintaining internal pressure. It sits in a machined groove on the gearbox mating face; the seal contains the oil bath that lubricates the shift mechanism and gear train. A degraded or compressed O-ring allows oil seepage, which leads to low lubricant level and accelerated gear wear. The original part is molded to the specified cross-section and durometer so it compresses to the correct fill ratio in the groove without extruding under load. On reinstallation, clean the groove thoroughly and lubricate the O-ring with gearbox oil before seating the cover.
