This thrust washer sits between the front axle housing and the steering knuckle or kingpin assembly. It controls the axial clearance of the axle, preventing metal-to-metal contact between the rotating and stationary components during steering and load cycles. A worn washer allows excessive end play, which produces a knocking sound during turns and accelerates wear on the kingpin bushings. The washer is machined to the original thickness so that the preload on the axle assembly is restored without adding shims. On reinstallation, clean the seating face and confirm the axle nut torque is within specification.
