It sits inside the main filter housing on the engine, positioned upstream of the mass airflow sensor and turbocharger inlet. A clogged or damaged filter element allows abrasive dust to bypass the intake system, which can score cylinder walls and accelerate turbocharger bearing wear. The filter media is designed to maintain a low pressure drop across the element while capturing fine particles, ensuring the engine receives a sufficient volume of clean air for complete combustion. On replacement, ensure the housing seal is clean and seated properly to prevent unfiltered air from entering the intake tract.
