This engine oil filter removes particulate and combustion byproducts from the engine lubricating oil before it circulates through the bearings and cylinder walls. It mounts on the engine block and receives oil from the pump; trapped contaminants prevent abrasive wear on the crankshaft and connecting-rod journals. A restricted filter element forces the bypass valve open, which sends unfiltered oil into the galleries and accelerates internal wear. The filter uses a seal that matches the housing's sealing surface, so a fresh element restores full filtration flow. On reinstallation, lightly oil the gasket and tighten the filter housing to the specified torque.
