It is a threaded fastener that clamps the manifold flange against the head gasket, maintaining a sealed joint for exhaust gas routing. A loose or corroded stud causes exhaust leaks, which reduce backpressure and can produce a ticking noise under load. This original part is machined to the same thread pitch and shank length as the factory stud, so no shimming or thread chasing is required during reinstallation. When replacing, clean the threaded hole in the head and apply anti-seize compound to the stud before torquing the nut to specification.
