This engine oil filter removes particulate and sludge from the engine lubricating oil before it circulates through the bearing journals, piston rings, and turbocharger. It mounts on the engine block and receives oil from the oil pump; the filter media traps wear debris and combustion byproducts that would otherwise cause abrasive wear in the main and rod bearings. A restricted filter forces the bypass valve open, sending unfiltered oil to the engine, which accelerates bearing and bore scoring. The manufacturer machines the sealing face to match the housing's gasket seat, ensuring the bypass valve cracks at the correct pressure differential. On replacement, clean the mounting surface and lightly oil the new seal before tightening to the specified torque.
