It is installed in the fuel line between the tank and the high-pressure pump, where it protects the injectors and pump internals from abrasive particles. A restricted filter reduces fuel flow, which can cause power loss and erratic engine operation under load. The filter element is constructed to the same media density and bypass-valve cracking pressure as the original assembly, ensuring the fuel system maintains proper pressure regulation. When replacing, drain the water separator if present and prime the system after installation.
