This cross-joint assembly transmits torque through the front axle driveline, connecting the output shaft to the wheel-end reduction gear. It accommodates angular misalignment between the axle shafts as the suspension articulates. Wear in the cross-joint bearings produces a knocking sound during low-speed turns and can lead to driveline vibration. The original joint is machined to the same bearing-journal diameter and needle-roller clearance as the axle housing, so no shimming is required during replacement. On installation, verify that the circlips seat fully in their grooves and that the joint rotates freely before torquing the axle-flange bolts.
