It prevents transmission fluid from leaking past the rotating shaft while keeping contaminants such as dust and moisture out of the wet clutch environment. A failing seal allows fluid loss that reduces clutch pack lubrication and cooling, leading to slip or premature wear. Corteco manufactures this ring to match the original seal groove geometry and shaft contact surface, so the installed seal maintains the correct interference fit without requiring shimming or adapter sleeves. On reinstall, clean the housing bore and shaft surface, and lubricate the seal lip before assembly.
