It sits at the outer end of the drag link or center link, where the ball stud articulates within a socket to accommodate suspension travel and steering angle changes. Wear in the ball-and-socket joint produces steering free play, imprecise directional response, and uneven tire wear. The manufacturer machines the ball stud and socket to the original geometry so the taper seats fully in the knuckle arm without shimming. On installation, tighten the castle nut to the specified torque and install a new cotter pin.
