This knife hold-down secures the reciprocating knife section against the cutterbar ledger plate, maintaining the cutting gap for a clean shear action. It is installed at intervals along the cutterbar, with each hold-down pressing the knife section down so the cutting edge contacts the ledger plate consistently. A worn or bent hold-down allows the knife to lift, which causes ragged stubble, increased draft load, and accelerated wear on both the knife sections and ledger plates. The original geometry matches the factory-set clearance between the hold-down tip and the ledger surface, so no shimming or bending is required during replacement. On installation, check that the hold-down exerts light contact against the knife back; adjust only if the gap exceeds the service specification.
