This spring applies tension to the right-side metering mechanism of the fertilizer drill, maintaining consistent pressure on the seed/fertilizer disc. It works in conjunction with the pivot arm and the cam follower to regulate the opening and closing of the metering slot. A weakened or broken spring causes uneven distribution rates and can lead to blocked coulters. The spring is formed to the same profile and free length as the original assembly, so it seats correctly in the retaining hooks without modification.
