It sits in a machined groove on the shaft, directly against the bearing inner race, and absorbs the thrust loads transmitted through the driveline. A dislodged or fatigued ring allows the shaft to shift, which misaligns the meshing gears and produces a distinct rattle or grinding noise from the gearbox housing. The ring is manufactured to the original groove width and thickness, so it seats fully without the need for shimming or additional retention hardware. On reinstallation, verify the ring is fully seated in the groove and that the snap-ring pliers engage the ring holes squarely to avoid distorting the ring profile.
