This O-ring seals the interface between the rear axle housing and its mating cover or bearing carrier. It prevents lubricant leakage from the axle cavity and blocks the ingress of dirt and moisture into the bearing and gear set. A compromised seal leads to visible oil weepage at the joint and, over time, can allow contamination that accelerates wear on the differential and final-drive components. The O-ring is manufactured to match the original groove geometry so it compresses to the correct cross-section when the housing is torqued to specification. On reinstallation, clean the groove thoroughly and lightly lubricate the O-ring before assembly to prevent pinching.
