This intake manifold gasket seals the joint between the manifold and the engine cylinder head. It prevents unmetered air from entering the intake tract, which would upset the air-fuel ratio and cause rough idle or reduced power. The gasket is compressed between the two mating surfaces during installation; a proper seal relies on clean, flat surfaces and the correct tightening sequence and torque for the manifold bolts. A leaking gasket typically produces a whistling sound under load and may trigger a lean-running diagnostic code.
