This knife is the tearing blade mounted on the corn header. It severs the stalk at the point of entry into the gathering chain, allowing the stalk to be pulled downward into the snapping rolls. The blade is positioned at the front of the row unit and interacts with the opposing stationary knife to create a shearing action. A dull or damaged knife causes ragged stalk ends, which increase the force required to feed the stalk and can lead to plugging of the gathering chains. The manufacturer machines this blade to the same mounting-hole pattern as the original assembly, so no drilling or modification is needed during replacement.
