This front axle oil seal retains lubricating oil inside the axle housing and prevents contaminants from entering the bearing cavity. It is installed at the wheel-end of the front axle, where the rotating shaft passes through the stationary housing. The seal's lip rides on the shaft surface; a worn or hardened lip allows oil to weep past, leading to bearing starvation and eventual hub damage. On installation, ensure the seal is pressed squarely into the bore and that the shaft surface is free of grooves or rust.
