It mounts into the auger tube and is actuated by a stationary cam track inside the drum; as the drum rotates, the cam forces the finger outward to engage the crop and then retracts it before the flighting passes the feeder opening. A broken or worn finger causes material to bunch at the auger ends, leading to plugging and uneven feeding. The manufacturer machines this finger to match the original cam-follower geometry and spring rate, so it engages and disengages at the correct drum rotation position without binding. When replacing, inspect the cam track and follower roller for wear; install the finger with the retaining pin fully seated.
