This friction disc sits inside the gearbox and transmits torque between the input shaft and the output shaft through the clutch pack. It is one of several discs that alternately clamp and release to select the desired gear ratio. When the disc's friction material wears below the service limit, the clutch pack begins to slip under load, causing gear engagement to become hesitant or noisy. The disc is manufactured to the same thickness and surface finish as the original assembly, so the clutch pack's clamping force and engagement timing are preserved without requiring shimming or adjustment. On reinstallation, inspect the mating steel plates for scoring and replace them if worn.
