This engine oil filter removes particulate from the lubricating oil circuit before the oil reaches the main bearings and turbocharger. It mounts on the engine block and receives oil from the pump; the filter element traps wear debris and combustion byproducts that would otherwise score journal surfaces and clog oil galleries. A restricted filter forces the bypass valve open, sending unfiltered oil to the engine, which accelerates bearing wear. The filter housing seals against the mounting base with a gasket that must be replaced at each service interval.
