A worn seal allows gear oil to weep onto the brake assembly, which can cause brake fade and attract dust that accelerates hub-bearing wear. The seal is manufactured to the original housing bore and shaft dimensions so that the lip rides on the correct surface without the need for a wear sleeve. On installation, ensure the seal is pressed squarely into the bore and that the shaft surface is free of grooves or rust.
