It sits between the rotating axle shaft and the stationary housing, maintaining a sealed boundary that retains lubricant while excluding dirt and moisture. A worn or hardened seal allows lubricant to escape and contaminants to enter, which accelerates bearing and gear wear in the axle assembly. The seal is molded to match the housing bore and shaft contact surface of the original assembly, preserving the interference fit required for reliable sealing under normal operating pressures. On installation, inspect the shaft surface for scoring and lubricate the seal lip before pressing it into the housing.
