This engine oil filter removes particulate from the lubricating oil before it circulates through the engine's bearing surfaces and oil galleries. It mounts on the engine block and receives oil from the pump; the filter media traps wear debris and combustion byproducts that would otherwise accelerate bearing and journal wear. A restricted filter element forces the integral bypass valve to open, sending unfiltered oil to the engine, which can lead to scoring and reduced service life. The filter housing seal must be replaced at each service, and the housing cap should be torqued to the manufacturer's specification to prevent leaks.
