Wear at the ball joint socket produces free play in the steering, which manifests as a wandering feel or delayed response to steering wheel input. The original part is machined to the same thread pitch and taper as the steering arm bore, so no shimming or adapter sleeves are required for correct preload. On replacement, tighten the castle nut to the specified torque and install a new cotter pin.
